Chifley's Bar and Grill is a Canberra restaurant inside the Hotel Kurrajong, where former Prime Minister Ben Chifley preferred to reside. An elegant and historic building in Barton, the hotel was recently renovated in December 2014.
I didn't know where I could get good steak in Canberra, until my foodie friends Michelle and Kristy told me about Chifley's last year. The previous menu had a strong focus on premium steaks. There was a whole page on the menu devoted to steaks, which listed its cut, weight, type of cattle and marbling factor. There was a total of 14 cuts of steak to choose from, half of which were Wagyu, ranging from $35 - $165 for each steak. Chifley's Bar and Grill was THE place for steak, especially Wagyu.
There had been a very recent menu change (so new it hasn't been updated on their website yet). I noticed the dedicated steak page had disappeared. Instead, three cuts of steak (down from 14) were left:
- Great Southern Black Angus Petite Eye Fillet 180 grams $34
- Cape Grim New York Sirloin 250 grams $36
- Murray Valley Aged Rib Eye on the bone 400 gram $42
All cuts served with sauteed greens, Paris mash or thick cut chips and your choice of sauce (roast pan jus, peppercorn sauce, mushroom sauce or Bernaise.
There was no more Wagyu left on the menu, but what was left came with sides and was a cheaper price overall.
I had never been disappointed before and I was keen to see whether the steak tasted as good as before.
Macgyver Boyfriend and I both got the Cape Grim New York Sirloin, I got mine with Bernaise sauce and paris mash. He got his with mushroom sauce and chips.
The meat was very tender and easy to cut. It was cooked medium rare, just the way I like it.
In terms of the sides, I preferred my mash over his chips. The chips weren't crunchy enough but the mash was fluffy and full of flavour. But I liked his creamy mushroom sauce over my Bernaise, which was a bit too acidic.
Overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the steak and how it was cooked. The service was very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere of the restaurant was pleasant and perfect for an intimate dinner. Given the price of average steaks in Canberra, Chifley's offers a very reasonable price for a good quality steak cooked to perfection.
I would love to see a few more steak choices added back on the menu (especially a Wagyu option). However, having had some very poor steaks of late, I would rate Chifley's Bar and Grill as the place where I've had the best steak in Canberra.
