When word got out this week about the Canberra milkshakes from Patissez, it broke the internet. The over-the-top "freakshakes" have been featured on the Canberra Times, Buzzfeed, the Daily Mail, Mashable, the Irish Examiner and even on TV on the Today Show. My instagram photo below was shared in some of those articles too!
#MacgyverBoyfriend was super excited when the Muddy pat hot shake was brought out @patissez! Who can blame him?? Warm fudgy hot chocolate, fudge brownie, chocolate fudge, whipped cream, toasted housemade marshmallow! 😍😍😍 #Canberra

I went to Patissez today to grab some takeaway slices of cake but the cake cabinet was sadly empty. And at 11am, it was a 4 hour wait for a table! According to someone who had been there since 8am, they waited two hours for their table.
Comments on the buzzfeed article that went viral indicated many were considering roadtrips to Canberra.
If you're thinking about coming to Canberra, home of the freakshakes, here are a few more roadtrip worthy shakes that will blow your mind!
1. Apple pie shake - April's Caravan (Braddon)
Think of apple pie and ice cream in liquid form. The flavours were of stewed apple, a bit of cinnamon and a hint of caramel. I loved the blue and white polka dotted takeaway cup. I loved it even more when April (?) told me to take a big sip so she could pour more shake in. We also got the Mocha Java spiced shake, which tasted like a beautiful iced chai.
2. Violet crumble shake - Penny University (Kingston) This is a sophisticated shake containing dark chocolate, honeycomb, violet syrup and ice cream. A complex but complementary combination of flavours. The violet syrup tasted almost cherry-like, which cut through the richness of the chocolate. I loved that it wasn't super sweet and focused more on the subtle balance of flavours. Perfect shake for one or share between two. Other unique shakes at Penny University include the Strawberry rhubarb and ginger crumble (or Apple rhubarb?)

and the Salted caramel, banana and walnut milkshake.

3. Bruno Mars milkshake - Fox and bow (Farrer)
Gelato on gelato action. This milkshake contains chocolate gelato, choc caramel fudge, topped with a scoop of salted caramel gelato. The chocolate and salted caramel flavours were a match made in heaven. While this particular shake is no longer available, they have just as amazing sounding shakes and smoothies named after celebrities - such as the Kimye and the Caitlyn (Jenner).
I've been having a wonderful staycation in Canberra this weekend! Today, I tried out newcomer Fox and Bow. The Bruno Mars shake - amazing sugary goodness! Milk, chocolate gelato, choc caramel fudge topped with salted caramel gelato! 😍 A photo posted by The Food Avenue (@thefoodavenue) on Apr 6, 2015 at 12:34am PDT
4. Assaulted Caramel - Marble and Grain (Civic)
The next milkshake is for adults only. Featuring Captain Morgan's spiced rum, Bailey's, milk and their very own caramel syrup topped off with cracked sea salt - this is Marble and Grain's signature cocktail. Very easy to drink and even easier to lose track of how many you've had!
If you're wanting a night cap, pop in to Marble and Grain and order their signature cocktail. Served in the cutest little milk bottle is the "Assaulted Caramel" - Captain Morgan's spiced rum, Bailey's, milk and their very own caramel syrup topped off with cracked sea salt. 5. Salted caramel popcorn shake - The Cupping Room (Civic)
Staying with the salted caramel theme, nothing beats the Cupping Room's king shake. It is a very sweet thickshake, topped with a huge piece of caramel popcorn.

The strawberry-flavoured Jam Donut shake comes with an actual doughnut! And if you're in a hurry, takeaway shakes are ideal.

6. Salted caramel smoothie - O' So Smoothie (Westside Acton Park)
While not technically a milkshake, this is a drink that has been included in my list because it is o' so good! It's a smoothie made of banana, cashews, dates, maca powder (Peruvian ginseng), agave syrup and almond milk - that tastes like a salted caramel milkshake! The dates in this smoothie give a natural sugar hit and a caramel-like flavour. The smoothies from this place have the added bonus of being dairy and gluten free, and suitable for vegans.
7. Nutty Professor - Eighty Twenty (Braddon) Another healthy alternative to the standard milkshake, that doesn't compromise on taste is the Nutty Professor. Cacao, milk (or milk alternative) banana, peanut butter and maca are blended together for a delicious peanut buttery drink.

While not exclusive to Canberra, Koko Black does amazingly decadent thickshakes too.

In my milkshake quest, I found a few other options, but didn't get a chance to check them out for myself. Frugii Dessert Laboratory will be selling thickshakes in their Braddon store in the coming weeks. However, Stripey Sundae at Gold Creek already do milkshakes with Frugii ice cream!
Ain't this the cutest little milkshake you ever did see?
