Ducks Nuts Canberra: First Look and Menu

O'Neill's Pub in Dickson is no more. In its place stands a shiny new sports bar called 'Ducks Nuts Bar and Grill'. The Food Avenue was invited to the opening launch party and contributor Housh Fallah went along to check it out.

Friends, music, sports on multiple TV screens, drinks, and then food. What more could you want on a Friday night? This was the scene that greeted us on the opening night of Ducks Nuts Bar and Grill.

Billed as a gastro pub, it certainly hit a lot of right notes.  Pardon the inadvertent pun.  While we didn't get the full size dishes, I enjoyed the samplings provided, with the mozzarella sticks my highlight of the night.  Crispy, seasoned coating with gooey, stretchy mozzarella inside.  I could easily just sit down in the sports bar and watch a game with a plate of those.

Other highlights were the juicy bite sizes of steak, The Peking Ducks Nuts burger hitting different notes of deliciousness, the spicy and crispy fried buttermilk chicken burger (although I would have been happy to eat it without the little bun that could have been softer), and chorizo & mozzarella croquettes. 

Then there were the sweets - smashed chocolate brownie sundae with salted caramel popcorn, berry tart, and lemon meringue tart.  I may or may not have had more than one serving of each as well as taking a couple of tarts home.

For those wanting a tipple or two, your needs are covered with premium beverages, cocktails and craft beers.  There are wine offerings from France, New Zealand, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and New South Wales, including a couple from Murrumbateman.  Hopefully for the local wine lovers, this number will increase over time.

If you want a quiet night out, then look elsewhere.  There's a buzz from the crowd to go with the live music.  Admittedly, after a few hours I had enough, but I enjoyed the night.  The crew I was with discussed already getting together again for a meal, and I'll be keen for then to check out the full dishes.
