With the Rum Bar permanently closed, another rum-focused bar has opened in Canberra. The Highball Express is a Cuban-themed tropical style cocktail bar in the CBD with over 500 rums and a cute story.
Their website says:
During prohibition, an airline popped into existence flying 'thirsty' Americans to Cuba. Offering cocktails served in highball glasses, the flight became affectionately known as The Highball Express. Upon landing they found themselves in paradise. Where they could freely enjoy cocktails, punches and exotic rums by the barrel.
Open since November 2015, the bar has exploded with popularity. A wild contrast to the dark speakeasy fit outs in recent bars, this tropical retreat takes people on a (boozy) holiday.
Highball Express offers punch bowls in 6 different flavours, for 3 people ($60) or 4 people ($80). This particular one was served with a flaming garnish.
A huge variety of cocktails range from $17-$22, including cocktails that are on tap!
The Dark and Stormy is my usual drink of choice, but when I read the description for the Berry Crumble, I couldn't resist. Barrel aged Bacardi Fuego rum, Cassis, butterscotch and apple juice. Spicy, sweet fruit apple pie.
My friend's *What's Up) Doc Old Fashioned with house made carrot syrup looked very cute!
I think this was a Pina colada?
The bar can be found in Odgers Lane. The entrance is via a staircase, right next to Loading Zone cafe.
This is the last week you'll get to try these cocktails as is. The good news is that the Summer 2.0 menu will be out next week!
Address: Level 1, 82 Alinga Street, Canberra City
Open Tuesday to Sunday
