Mookie Burger

Mookie is a new burger joint in Canberra. Located on Genge St in Civic, Mookie opened on 21 September by giving away 100 free burgers, 100 free concretes and 100 free sweet potato fries. Suffice to say, there was a lot of hype surrounding the launch of this new burger place, including a bold claim in a Canberra Times article that they've come pretty close to creating the "perfect" burger.

I wouldn't be a typical Canberran if I didn't check out the newest cafe/restaurant opening. Burger aficionado Macgyver Husband didn't need any convincing when I suggested having Mookie one evening for dinner. We arrived early - about 5:30pm and there were already people having an early dinner as well. We found a spot on the edge of one of the outside benches and perused the menu.

We both decided to get the Mookie Burger ($11) 100% pure grass fed black angus beef, lettuce, tomato, cheese and mookie sauce. Patty cooked medium-rare unless otherwise requested. Being pregnant, I asked for my patty to be cooked well done. We also checked whether the mookie sauce was pregnant-safe and was told it wasn't. Even at 5:30, there was a short line to order our meals, but the food came out relatively quickly. By 6pm, the ordering line was out the door and we were glad we came early.

Although I enjoyed the meat to bread ratio, there were not many other positives about my burger. Without some kind of sauce, my mookie burger was bland. It was also about the size of a Maccas cheeseburger. Macgyver Husband finished his in about three bites. It was a real shame they didn't provide an alternative, pasteurised sauce.

Macgyver Husband ordered a Red Velvet shake ($7.50) and I just had a coke ($4.50). I tried his shake and I didn't like it at all, but he did.

We also had the Maple Bacon Fries - sweet potato fries, maple braised bacon lardons, topped with chives and sweet paprika ($12.50). The first one or two fries tasted good, but it was so sweet and rich that I couldn't have much more (even though I was hungry). We left more than half of the fries and decided to satisfy our burger craving at Braddon Maccas.

The concretes, as described by the menu, looked tempting, but after such a disappointing feed, we decided to leave the concretes for another day. That day came after a meal at Kokomo's. We wandered into Mookie at 9:15pm only to be told they were closing up and not even the concretes were available. We asked by how long we had missed out and they said 9:10pm. So 5 minutes! Damn. We thought that seemed quite early and noticed that their opening hours say they are open "11am til late". I guess 9pm counts as late in Canberra!

With their logo in Japanese katakana characters and a Japanese feel to the decor, I expected some kind of Japanese twist with the food. But it was difficult to taste the Japanese influences in their burger and fries.
