Otis Dining Hall opened in September 2016, where the Belgium Beer Cafe was in Kingston. It is owned by chef Damian Brabender, previously the head chef at Sage Dining Rooms in Braddon.
To celebrate the award of an Australian Good Food Guide Chef Hat for 2017, Otis was providing a complimentary glass of local Canberra sparkling wine or their own "Otis Black" lager with every tasting menu in January. I had heard lots of good things about Otis, so decided to check out their 5 course chef's tasting menu for $70 per person.
The cosy venue still feels warm and inviting, but does away with the booths from the Belgian Beer Cafe. Instead, they are replaced with individual (very comfy) chairs. Service was very friendly and we were offered the matching wines but the complimentary wine or beer wasn't mentioned until I brought it up.
I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered the complimentary wine was the Lerida Estate Zenzi Rosato Frizzante, a delicate sparkling pink wine - one of my favourite Canberra wines. Macgyver boyfriend ordered the Otis black lager. I had a sip and quite enjoyed the bold, rich flavour.
The food came out at a good pace and we finished all five courses in less than 1.5 hours. Each dish was beautifully presented. The use of bowls was an intriguing choice. Particularly for the quail dish, it was difficult to use my knife and fork to cut the meat off. I resorted to using my fingers like a caveman.
Macgyver boyfriend doesn't normally like the taste of lamb, but he said it was his favourite savoury dish. My favourite dish was the panna cotta dessert. It was a refreshing summer dessert with delicious seasonal fruits.
At $70 a head, this tasting menu is good value compared to other degustations around Canberra and is worth a try. However, I didn't think the taste of the food was as good as the presentation. I have heard good things about the a la carte menu so that's what we'll be trying next.
Value for money: 3.5/5
This meal was paid for completely by The Food Avenue.
