In previous years, the Park Hyatt Canberra held a Truffle Degustation Dinner paired with Veuve Clicquot champagne in their ballroom. This year, Park Hyatt Canberra decided to collaborate with four wineries to showcase luxurious black truffles with local produce and wine. I had the pleasure of attending the first 4-course Truffle Degustation Dinner as the Park Hyatt’s guest.

When I walked in to the Promenade Cafe, I was blown away by the elaborate table decorations and centrepieces.

I was greeted with a cocktail featuring the Brokenwood Pinot Gris 2017, which was absolutely delicious. I knew nothing about Brokenwood Wines, but soon found out that it was a Hunter Valley winery founded by a trio of Sydney solicitors in 1970.

Senior winemaker Stuart Hordern spoke to us about the different wine types they produce and the amount of effort required for each. Pinot noir makes up 10% of their production but occupies 45% of Stuart's mental capacity, whereas Shiraz makes up 40% of their production and occupies only 10% of his mental capacity!

Before each course was served, Canberra Park Hyatt's Executive Chef Nitin Kumar shared with us how the food had been prepared.

The dishes were delicious as well as creative. In the first course, we were served half an avocado, but the avocado had actually been hollowed out and refilled with avocado mousse! And the dessert course featured a stunning cake that looked just like a red apple!

I enjoyed each and every course of this luxurious degustation and the wine pairings. I had not heard of Brokenwood Wines before, but will definitely be ordering the Oakey Creek Vineyard Semillon 2011 and (probably the Sticky Wicket Semillon too).

If you have not been to a truffle dinner before in Canberra, I encourage you to get to one of the ones being held at the prestigious Park Hyatt Canberra. It's a great way to taste some fabulous wines and indulge in excellent fine dining.
