Movenpick Kingston

Tasting platter

Movenpick in Kingston officially opened tonight! I went along to the launch and was treated to the Swiss ice cream and desserts.

The night started with a tasting platter of a scoop each of the Creme Brulee and the (new release) Blueberry Cheesecake, as well as a macaron with the Swiss chocolate ice cream.

Thanks to the lovely Jamie for being so patient while I proceeded to taste just about all the flavours in the store! Thanks to Movenpick Kingston for inviting me to check it out.

Canberra: Where to go for Friday night drinks?

A reader asked me a question on my Facebook page yesterday - where are some good Friday night drinks and happy hours in Canberra? I was on my way to dinner when I saw the message so couldn't reply straight away, but when I went to find the message again, it seemed to have disappeared... Hopefully she'll find the answer if I post it on here!

My answer would be that I usually seek out happy hours because of the food! I guess that's why my blog is called The Food Avenue and not The Drinks Avenue!

It should be no surprise then that my favourite Friday night drinks venue is C Dine for their Buck a Shuck $1 oyster happy hour!

I'm a huge fan of seafood, especially oysters and $1 for oysters is too good an opportunity to pass up! A couple of things have changed slightly since my review. The happy hour is now from 5pm-6pm. Only the natural and classic mignonette flavours are available for $1, the other flavours are full price. It's still a great bargain in a fantastic venue. The atmosphere is relaxed and full of happy people about to start their weekend. House beer and wine are $5 during happy hour.

I think the Kingston Foreshore is a great location for Friday night drinks. You've got Walt and Burley on one end, and new pub The Dock opening on the other end. If you're after amazing cocktails, you've got to stop in at The Rum Bar. My favourite coctail is the one pictured - Under the Mistletoe. It's a very festive and delicious cocktail that immediately brings thoughts of warm gingerbread cookies and Christmas fruit cake on first sip. The food menu doesn't disappoint either. I could easily spend a few hours in this superb bar.

With the weather warming up now, there are quite a few options for Friday night drinks around the place. I have a couple events on my wish list:

  • Friday night drinks at Old Parliament House - with cute food in carts (including pulled beef sliders and sweet potato wedges). More details at In the Taratory.
  • Fridays on the terrace at Parlour Wine Room - with a pop-up bar from Eden Road Wines and 2 for 1 tapas between 4pm and 6pm! More details at A Kitchen Cat.

There are probably heaps of great Friday night drinks options in Canberra that I've missed! Comment below and let me know :)

First look: Local Press Cafe, Kingston Foreshore, Canberra

After my first visit to Local Press in Kingston, I was kicking myself for not discovering this gorgeous cafe earlier. I was impressed immediately by the decor as my dining companion and I entered the cafe. The rustic and creative furniture complements the artfully distressed walls to create a very funky vibe. Cute cushions, cool knick knacks and nautical-themed accents adorn the cafe.

The kitchen door is the most unique kitchen door I've ever seen!

Showcasing what they're all about, boxes of fresh produce line the floor under the counter and platters of fruit are scattered around the cafe.

The whole cafe is very open and the glass windows allow an abundance of sunshine into the cafe, adding to the wholesome atmosphere.

You can see right into the kitchen as well!

Local Press Cafe is a favourite amongst Canberra bloggers. It's easy to see why. Local Press has a very natural yet cosy atmosphere, not to mention very friendly staff who look like they love to work in the cafe. Brian efficiently took our orders on an iPad, and gave us a huge smile for absolutely no charge!

We ordered some chai tea, which came in a teapot and a delightfully cute tea cosy!

The cold pressed beetroot juice sounded too good to pass up! And I wasn't disappointed. The colour was gorgeous and it was absolutely delicious - the beetroot flavour surprisingly subtle and sweet.

This cafe is utterly instagrammable!

I ordered the Green Breaky Plate ($18), which consisted of Za'atar coated boiled eggs with kale, salmon, quinoa, avocado, asparagus and goats cheese. The chefs here clearly know how to make healthy food taste good. This dish was a cleverly orchestrated mix of fresh ingredients. Much consideration had been given to the flavours of the dish as well as making sure there were crunchy and creamy textural elements.

My dining companion ordered the Green Pea Pancake ($16) - poached eggs, guacamole, crushed feta, mint and chives dressed with house pomegranate-balsamic reduction. I will definitely be back to try this dish next time.

I was highly impressed by how much thought has been put into every aspect of this cafe - the decor, the food, the drinks, and the service. And we seriously considered staying on for lunch when we had a sneak peek at the lunch menu. I'm sure I won't be able to stay away from this lovely cafe for long!
