Two Before Ten, Canberra City

Two Before Ten is a boutique roasting company in Canberra. It started as a small cafe in Hobart Place before moving to a larger location in Aranda. In July 2016, it opened a city cafe, back in Hobart Place, in the space briefly occupied by 79 and Fine cafe.

The manager of Two Before Ten in the city invited me in to try the new summer menu.

It was a busy Sunday morning when I arrived with Macgyver Boyfriend and my future mother-in-law. A sunny space with bright yellow details greeted us.

The place was packed with Spilt Milk revellers who had presumably just checked out of their accommodation. I wondered if this would impact on wait times for food and drink orders.

I ordered the Eggs (poached or scrambled) with house tomato chutney on sourdough ($13) and added bacon ($4) and salmon gravlax ($4).

It was a generous serving and the scrambled eggs were delightfully fluffy. The chutney was a nice touch but wasn't quite as good as something similar at Teddy Picker’s.

Not so generous was my mother-in-law’s order: the Brown bear ($13) – boiled egg, smashed avocado, rye muffin, with mushrooms. It certainly looked more like a side dish and she said the rye muffin was dry and not enjoyable.

Our meals took about an hour to arrive, but the staff apologised for the wait.

One of the new summer menu items is the TBT Breaky Wrap ($12) – spiced beans, scrambled egg, swiss cheese and avocado, add chorizo ($4).

Macgyver Boyfriend really enjoyed the wrap, which was full of flavour and very filling.

Other dishes on the summer menu include the Spiced eggs on toast with avocado, Persian feta and espelette spice ($17), and Oricchiette with broccolini, peas, mint, fetta, pangrattato and chilli garlic oil ($17).

We finished off with a couple of juices.

I loved the marble tables and mismatched chairs that all seemed to go together. It's a gorgeous space with plenty of natural light - perfect for a breakfast date!
